Case of Hypervitaminosis
This is the case of a 2 1/2 years old male child whose mother reported to us
with his complaints of pain in both the calf muscles since 2 years almost daily.
He was a diagnosed case of hypervitaminosis (A& B). His pain used to aggravate
at night and on touching. Due to this the child had crying episodes almost every
night lasting for 3 to 4 hours. The calf pain occurred usually an hour after
sleep between 12 to 5 a.m.
Along with this he had complaints of recurrent cold and cough since birth whose
frequency was almost 8 to 10 times in a year and that was aggravated in the
rainy season and by change of weather. He had vomiting of sticky white
expectoration along with loose cough that was aggravated at night. Every time he
had these attacks of cold and cough, his appetite used to reduce drastically.
Sometimes he also complained of pain in the abdomen especially in the umbilical
region once or twice a month which used to aggravate whenever he was
constipated. The child had frequent itching in the anal region that used to be
better after deworming.
The child had marked craving for salty things and chocolates. He used to
perspire profusely especially on the scalp and back and was thermally a hot
child. He did not have a sound sleep owing to the calf pains. Also his mother
complained of him having a very low appetite.
He had marked fear of darkness and of being alone even for a short while. Along
with this he also had a marked fear of crawling things and would hide behind his
mother if would see anything creeping or crawling. He was a playful child but
did not mix up readily with children of his age.
He had a past history of malaria and amongst his family his mother suffered from
Rheumatoid Arthritis and his younger brother from recurrent colds and cough.
Based on the above history a constitutional homoeopathic remedy Capsicum 200 to
be taken thrice a day for two weeks was selected that would cover his entire
complaints along with a single dose of Syphilinum 1M to be taken bed time. Two
weeks later when he reported to us his calf pains remained the same. His crying
episodes had slightly reduced and his anal itching was better upto 75%. His
appetite remained the same and abdominal pain remained the same. Later when he
reported to us after another 3 weeks his calf pains were better upto 50%. Anal
itching was no longer present. The frequent abdominal pains showed significant
improvement. He had an episode of cold and cough but with much reduced intensity
than ever before. His crying episodes were better upto 75% due to which he
started getting a sound sleep which thereby improved his overall wellbeing as
well as appetite. In the next follow up his entire complaints were better upto
85%. This child responded very brilliantly to homoeopathy for his entire
complaints in a very short period of time i.e. about 2 months. He was asked to
continue the medications for a period of another few months.
Remark: The remedy prescribed in this case is
patient-specific i.e. it has been prescribed based on the
symptoms specific to the patient at that point of time. It
is advisable that the patient does not indulge in any
self-medication.
